German Ambassador: Neuseeland News is helping to further the bilateral relationship
The only German language travel & lifestyle publication in New Zealand, Neuseeland News(NN), is celebrating its tenth anniversary. “With the increasing numbers of visitors and immigrants from Germany, demand for NN is also steadily increasing,” says the publication company´ s founder, German journalist Gerhard Uster, who himself emigrated to New Zealand with his family in 1996 and started NN 1998 in Whangarei (Northland).
Neuseeland News is available in New Zealand and Germanic Europe as a bi-monthly print publication with a distribution of 50 000 hard copies p.a. Annual Special Editions are distributed during the world´ s leading travel expo, ITB in Berlin. With its travel & lifestyle content, the publication caters for tourists from Germanic Europe as well as for German immigrants in New Zealand.
Combined with its online editions, NN attracts an annual readership of about 450 000 users. The publication is predominantly funded from advertising revenue in its print and online editions. NN will be celebrating its success with a Special Anniversary edition in early September.
Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) as the international marketing organization has congratulated Neuseeland News on its efforts in promoting New Zealand over the last 10 years. German visitors in New Zealand spent about NZ $ 244 m in 2007.
“We look forward to working with NN for another decade to welcome more German and German-speaking visitors to New Zealand for what, for many, will be a holiday of a lifetime,” said TNZ Chief Executive Officer George Hickton.
The German Ambassador in Wellington, Jörg Zimmermann, sent his congratulations: “Neuseeland News with its interesting articles provides a bridge between New Zealand and Germany. This publication is helping to further the bilateral relationship between both countries and I congratulate Neuseeland News on its 10th anniversary.”
Zimmermann pointed out, that more than 60 000 tourists from Germany and about 5000 young Germans on a working holiday visa visit New Zealand per annum. More than 1000 Germans immigrate to New Zealand every year. The bilateral exchange in science and cultural aspects was also on the increase. “NN plays an important role in this positive development and I wish this publication to be able to further its success”, said the German Ambassador.
“The diverse editorial content of Neuseeland News is proof that New Zealand has more to offer than beautiful landscapes”, said Erich Bachmann, President of the New Zealand German Business Association (NZGBA) in a greetings telegram from Auckland. “With an annual volume of NZ $ 800 m Germany has become an important export market for New Zealand”, added Monique Surges, General Manager of the NZGBA, which is the New Zealand representation of the official German foreign trade network. “10 years NN also mean 10 years of trusting and constructive cooperation between the publication and this association.”

GERMAN CONSUMER CONFIDENCE HIGH A closely watched survey has shown that German consumer confidence has soared to the highest level since last October, bolstered by a strong labor market and new wage agreements. The forward-looking GfK index has risen to 5.9 points in May, up from a revised 4.8 points in April, as the research group's economic outlook indicator, income expectations and the propensity to buy indicators all climbed.
The Nuremberg-based group said in a statement that the upswing in the job market and recent wage agreements have both contributed to overall expectations of the economy, and to people assessing their personal financial situations more positively. (New Zealand German Business Association)

The readiness of German travellers to consider environmental aspects when planning their holidays seems to have decreased over the past year, according to a recent survey of the Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung: Two thirds of the participants answered that they don’t care about the environment when making decisions. However, more than 25% stated that they protect the environment and try to save money by using less petrol. This development might be caused by the growing gap between poor and rich population groups in times of economic uncertainty. Within the high income group there continues to be a greater awareness for sustainable tourism. At the same time airlines are paying more respect to the environment by establishing tools and projects to compensate for greenhouse gases. Germany’s initiative Atmosfair, founded in 2005 as a joint project of tour operator coop “forum anders reisen” (“travel differently”) and the environmental organisation Germanwatch supported by the German Federal Department for Environmental Affairs, was a leading force in this development. Today many international airlines offer similar carbon offset tools, among them Air New Zealand and Lufthansa. (noble insight germany)
According to a survey of the online travel agency Expedia in cooperation with the market research institute Harris Interactive amongst 5,000 people from Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain and the United States, Germans are hardworking but also use nearly all their vacation days. With on average annually 27 days of paid vacation, Germans have the lowest number of vacation days in Europe, except for the Britons with only 26 days. At the top of the list are the French with 37 days on average, followed by the Italians (33) and the Spanish (31). Although Americans get only 14 annual days of paid vacations, they only use 11 of them. In contrast 81% of the Germans take their vacation days completely. (noble insight germany)
